Manchester City have announced the contract extension of Yui Hasegawa until 2029. The midfielder joined the club in September 2022 from West Ham United.
Across three seasons with City, she has missed only four matches, taking her appearance tally close to 100 in rapid fashion. The Japan international has contributed two goals and eight assists in all competitions. She was shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or in both 2023 and 2024, and was also named the 2024/25 Etihad Player of the Season by supporters.
Hasegawa is expected to feature in a more advanced role this season, as she did in the final months of last year. With the arrival of Sydney Lohmann, that tactical shift could become a regular feature.
What Yui Hasegawa had to say
“I’m very happy to have signed my contract extension, I’m so excited. I’m so excited because we can win the title this season. Because we have great players and a good football style so I hope this season will be good.
“I really want to win the title at this club and there are players I want to play with. This is one of the biggest reasons [why I wanted] to stay here.”

Manchester City have also announced contract extensions for Lily Murphy and Codie Thomas, keeping both players at the club until 2027.
The club has been busy in the transfer market this summer as well. Laura Wienroither signed permanently after her loan spell last season, in which she made eight appearances. Goalkeeper Eartha Cumings has joined to strengthen the department, while Sydney Lohmann arrives from Bayern Munich and Iman Beney from the Swiss Super League.
Lily Murphy
Murphy, a 19-year-old forward, signed her first professional contract with City during the 2024/25 campaign. In her debut season, she made 33 appearances, scoring two goals and providing two assists.
She progressed through the Manchester City Academy after joining in 2022 and made her senior debut in 2024 against Paris FC in a Women’s Champions League qualifier. Her first goal followed soon after, against St. Pölten in December of the same year.
Codie Thomas
Thomas has also signed a two-year extension, keeping her at City until 2027. She joined the club in 2016 and has frequently been named in senior matchday squads. She made her debut in the Women’s Champions League against St. Pölten in 2025, followed by Women’s Super League appearances against Leicester City.
