NY Giants QB Jaxson Dart Could Make NFL Debut vs. Commanders

Heading into the 2025 season, the loaded quarterback room has been a heavily debated topic when it comes to the New York Giants. Leading up to their season opener against the Washington Commanders, developments emerged that multiple players could get snaps under center.

During the offseason, the Giants did a complete makeover at the quarterback position. Along with bringing in veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, they nabbed Jaxson Dart on draft night. This gives the franchise some stability in the short term while also having a prospect to potentially build around for the future.

Although many have tried to make a case for the rookie taking the reins, Brian Daboll has maintained a firm stance. Wilson was named the starter during training camp, and that remains the case to begin the regular season.

Giants might utilize rookie QB Jaxson Dart Week 1 vs. Commanders

Following practice on Wednesday, SNY's Connor Hughes touched on the latest regarding the Giants' quarterbacks. While Wilson is set in stone as the starter for the time being, Dart might see some action against the Commanders Sunday. Hughes noted that New York has a handful of packages prepared for the rookie and could toss him out there in certain situations Week 1.

"It seems like the Giants might just have a package of plays for rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart to make his debut and contribute to this team's offensive effort on Sunday," Hughes said. "And there's a reason why that would happen. Dart was widely impressive in OTAs and minicamp and training camp. He was even more impressive than widely impressive in the preseason."

As the team's long-term option at QB, it was seen as a foregone conclusion that Dart would get reps in the regular season at some point. However, based on these developments, that opportunity may come sooner rather than later.

Getting the chance to play Week 1 would be big for Dart, as he'd have another chance to show he's ready to lead the Giants now. If he can dazzle like he did in the preseason, it will only strengthen his case for Daboll to start playing him over Wilson.

Only time will tell if and how often Daboll will call Dart's number when New York takes on the Commanders Sunday.
