2 former Alabama players return to NFL practice squads

Released from the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad on Friday, former Alabama cornerback Eli Ricks returned to that NFL roster spot on Wednesday.

Former Alabama offensive tackle Amari Kight made an even faster return to the NFL. Released from the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad on Tuesday, Kight re-signed to return on Wednesday.

After releasing Kight, defensive back Shemar Jean-Charles and running back Damien Martinez to sign defensive tackle Anthony Campbell, defensive end Jalan Gaines and offensive tackle Sataoa Laumea for the practice squad on Tuesday, the Seahawks released Campbell, Gaines and Laumea to re-sign Kight, Jean-Charles and Martinez on Wednesday.

Seattle apparently had Campbell, Gaines and Laumea on the practice squad on Tuesday so they would receive a week’s pay after they’d spent the offseason, training camp and preseason with the Seahawks before being released last week.

A standout at Thompson High School in Alabaster, Kight played at Alabama in the 2020, 2021 and 2022 seasons before transferring to UCF. Kight joined the Seahawks as an undrafted rookie in May, and he played 106 offensive snaps and 10 special-teams plays in Seattle’s three preseason games.

Ricks initially joined the Eagles as an undrafted rookie in 2023, and he made the regular-season roster. After playing in 16 regular-season games and one playoff contest in 2023, Ricks played in seven games last season while dealing with groin and knee injuries.

Last week, Philadelphia waived Ricks when it reduced its preseason roster to the regular-season limit of 43 players, re-signed the cornerback for the practice squad the next day, then waived him again two days later.

Each NFL team can have a practice squad of 16 players. Members of the practice squad do everything the players on the active roster do except play in games. But two practice-squad members can be elevated to active status for each game, although no player can be elevated from the practice squad more than three times in a season.

On the other side of the NFL’s transactions report for Wednesday, former Auburn nose tackle Isaiah Raikes lost his spot on the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad.

Raikes joined Tennessee in May as an undrafted rookie. Waived at the preseason/regular-season cutline, Raikes had returned the next day to the Titans’ practice squad.
