AAA offers tailgating safety tips as football and fall sports return

UPPER MICHIGAN, (WLUC) - The return of students to the classroom also marks the start of the fall sports seasons. The sport of football is often one of the most anticipated from the high school level to the NFL.

That brings back the age-old tradition of tailgating ahead of kickoff. AAA wants everyone to remember that tailgating does come with its fair share of fire dangers.

The agency has put together some tips for fans to celebrate safely.

If you’re grilling outside a stadium, that brings open flames, hot coals and flammable materials into close quarters. AAA recommends fans keep their grill away from vehicles, tents and flammable gear.

Also, keep a fire extinguisher nearby as a proactive tool to cool coals or stop flare-ups before they spread. Most importantly, never leave your grill unattended.

As for post-grill safety, AAA recommends fully extinguishing all flames and coals. Never assume they’ll cool on their own.

Dispose of ashes properly. AAA says this is best accomplished by using a metal can with a lid. Using plastic bags can cause them to melt or ignite again.

It’s also important to check for flare-ups before leaving your tailgating party. Do a final walk around of the area to make sure nothing is smoldering or leaking fuel.

When transporting your grill, AAA recommends making sure your grill is clean and fastened somewhere where it won’t tip or get damaged.
