Forget Woltemade: Newcastle ready to make their best move of the year after talks with £40m…

Newcastle United are in talks to extend the contract of Tino Livramento, according to i News, and it could be the best bit of business they do this year.

Since making the move from now-Championship side Southampton for a fee which could total £40m, Livramento has developed into one of the best right-backs in the Premier League. The Magpies paid a significant fee to bring him to St James' Park, but it's looked to have paid off so far. The England international was likely eyed as a natural successor to Kieran Trippier, and he's even providing cover on the left-hand side of defence.

Livramento still has three years remaining on his current deal, but after losing such a key player in Alexander Isak in the summer transfer window, Newcastle will be hoping to avoid something like that happening again. The 22-year-old, described as 'outstanding' by Alan Shearer, could be about to land himself a new deal.

Newcastle in Talks to Extend Livramento Contract

Tino Livramento in action for Newcastle United

According to a report from i News, Newcastle are in talks to extend the contract of Livramento after the summer transfer window closed. Manchester City made a move to try and secure his signature earlier in the year, but the Magpies rejected their attempts and are now hoping to tie him down to a longer deal.

It was a busy summer transfer window for the North East club, bringing in a host of new players, particularly after they were forced to sell Isak, who joined Liverpool for a monumental fee. Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade arrived through the door to give Eddie Howe new options through the middle of attack.

Tieing down Livramento to an extended contract could be the best bit of business that Newcastle do this year, despite strengthening significantly in the summer transfer window. His versatility and ability to play at such a high level on either side of defence is hugely beneficial to the Magpies, and he's still only 22, meaning he's yet to reach his full potential.

Extending a player's contract might mean very little in terms of keeping them at the club, as we saw with Isak in the summer who forced a move, but it would be a statement of intent for the Magpies, issuing a hands-off warning to clubs such as Man City who are keen to prise him away from St James' Park.

Although the signings of Woltemade, Wissa, and Anthony Elanga were excellent, tieing Livramento down could be the best business Newcastle do in 2025.
