Yasir Al-Rumayyan breaks Newcastle United silence as major club decision made

Newcastle United have confirmed former Real Madrid man David Hopkinson as the club’s new CEO.

Yasir Al-Rumayyan has welcomed David Hopkinson to the club after Newcastle United appointed a new CEO.

The Canadian - formerly at Real Madrid and recently the president of Madison Square Garden Sports Corporation - will replace Darren Eales in the role. Newcastle have been without a CEO since June as Eales, who has been undergoing medical treatment for a chronic form of blood cancer.

It is understood that the 53-year-old - appointed in 2022 from Atlanta United - has resumed short-term work to help with the handover process. Club chairman Al-Rumayyan has given an update to the club website, while also thanking Eales for his three-year reign.

Yasir Al-Rumayyan welcomes David Hopkinson

“We are delighted to welcome David to Newcastle United,” Al-Rumayyan said. “David is an outstanding executive whose track record across global sport and entertainment speaks for itself.

“His experience and strategic capabilities will be invaluable as we continue to build on the club's presence locally and grow it globally on and off the pitch. David's leadership will be critical as we build upon what we have already achieved since the acquisition towards an exciting future and sustainable success.

"I would like to personally thank Darren Eales for his exceptional work and leadership, as well as his friendship, over the last three years."
