Ekitike out to break 10-year streak as Premier League POTM nominees revealed

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City talents are among the eight nominees for the Premier League's Player of the Month award for August.

Three games into the new season, and reigning champions Liverpool boast the only perfect record in England's top flight thanks to their 1-0 beating of rivals Arsenal last weekend.

Arne Slot's side therefore went into the international break leading the way at the summit of thePremier League table, and their feats have now been recognised with two Player of the Month nominations.

New signing Hugo Ekitike and versatile Hungarian Dominik Szoboszlai are both up for the prize, the former rewarded for three goal contributions in his first three Premier League appearances for the holders.

Ekitike has struck two Premier League goals of his own and set up another since making the switch from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer transfer window, and he could be the first French winner of the POTM prize in almost exactly 10 years following Anthony Martial's success in September 2015.

Ekitike is one of two Liverpool players on the list of nominees, as Szoboszlai is aiming to become the first-ever Hungarian to win the award after playing critical roles in the Reds' victories over Newcastle United and Arsenal.

Szoboszlai firstly produced a sumptuous dummy for Rio Ngumoha in the 3-2 victory at St James' Park, prior to his astounding free kick against the Gunners, where he excelled in all facets of the game at right-back.

The Reds pair face intense competition, though, as Manchester City's Erling Haaland hopes to win the award for the fourth time after finding the back of the net three times in three games, while Chelsea new boy Joao Pedro is also on the shortlist after producing two goals and two assists in August.

Meanwhile, Arsenal left-back Riccardo Calafiori - who scored the winner at Old Trafford against Manchester United and provided two assists against Leeds United - has also been nominated, as has Jack Grealish, who has already provided four assists for Everton.

Finally, Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo is up for the prize after registering two goals and an assist last month, while Crystal Palace rock Marc Guehi could become only the Eagles' second winner of the award after Andrew Johnson and Wilfried Zaha.

Shortly after the Player of the Month nominees were announced, the four-strong shortlist for the Manager of the Month was revealed, and Liverpool boss Arne Slot unsurprisingly leads the way.

The Dutchman won the award just once in the Reds' triumphant campaign last term - in November 2024 - and he could now become the third Netherlands representative to take home more than one MOTM accolade after Erik ten Hag and Ronald Koeman (three each).

Slot's rivals for the Manager of the Month trophy include Chelsea's Enzo Maresca, whose Blues side sit second in the rankings courtesy of their unbeaten start to the season, and Everton's David Moyes, an 11-time winner.

Finally, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has been nominated after masterminding wins against Brentford and West Ham United; no Black Cats boss has won the award since Martin O'Neill in 2011.
