Matthew Golden Reveals Why He Switched Jersey Numbers

The Green Bay Packers shocked their fanbase, along with the rest of the NFL world, when they used a first-round pick on Matthew Golden in the 2025 NFL Draft.

It had been over 20 years since they’d used a first-round selection on a receiver, something fans and players had been clamoring for over the course of several seasons.

Aaron Rodgers wasn’t shy about wanting a first-round receiver, but the team didn’t make that decision until he was out of the organization.

Golden is an exciting player with high upside, given his strong hands and elite speed, someone who could help Jordan Love turn from good to great.

He has been in the news a few times over the past few weeks, as he has switched his jersey number to zero.

This was a big change, especially since this number hasn’t been worn by a Packer throughout franchise history.

Golden talked about this in an interview shared via reporter Matt Schneidman on X.

“I always wanted a single-digit. They said zero never been worn here, so obviously it’s gonna be first time in franchise history. For me, I just wanna make a name for myself and that number. The number was presented to me, and I took it. I wanted it, and I just went from there,” Golden said.

Jersey numbers mean a lot to athletes, especially NFL athletes, and Golden seems to feel honored and respected by wearing No. 0.

The Packers are a historic organization that has been playing in the league for over 100 years, so to wear a number for the first time is something that isn’t taken lightly.

With any luck, Golden will do this number and the team proud, turning into an elite receiver that can help this offense take a giant leap.
