Opinion: Everton enjoy the last laugh after fresh Neal Maupay development is shared

Everton saw a number of players move on from Merseyside at the end of their contracts.

There was also some loan departures on deadline day, with Harrison Armstrong joining Preston North End for the season.

However, Everton did not make a lot of money through player sales, having only sold two players over the entire summer.

One of those players did not depart until the final hours of the window.

Youssef Chermiti joined Rangers in a deal which could be worth up to £10m, with add-ons included.

There was only one other actual sale in the summer to bring in some money for David Moyes to reinvest in the squad.

It was not a lot of money, but Neal Maupay finally left Everton and his struggles since will entertain a number of fans on Merseyside.

It has been a turbulent few years for Maupay both on and off the pitch, which has led to him now finding himself at another crossroads.

According to Qatari news outlet Alkass, a potential move away from Marseille has now broken down for the French striker.

Greek side PAOK have now withdrawn themselves from the running for the 29-year-old’s signature.

In addition, talks between Maupay and the Italian outfit Sassuolo also broke down, which has left Maupay’s future under Roberto De Zerbi hanging by a thread.

Everton boosted their PSR headroom through the sale of Maupay, but offloading him from their squad provided a real boost for the fans.

The relationship between the fans and Maupay has certainly soured over recent years, but the striker would surely now wish for a second chance on Merseyside.

What Neal Maupay has said about Everton

The list is very long when it comes to the public digs that have come from Maupay towards the Toffees.

Gary Lineker slammed Maupay for mocking Everton on social media, but the Frenchman did not just stop there.

Maupay also took aim at Everton’s style of play, with the striker suggesting he wasn’t well suited to the system on Merseyside.

“I think pretty much everything, to be honest with you. The club wasn’t in the right place in terms of the manager because we changed the manager that season. I think the way we were playing didn’t fit my game.

“If you try to play long ball football and put crosses into a player like me, that doesn’t match my characteristics, so it won’t work.
