“We both laughed” – Arsenal star plays down incident with Liverpool man

Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber has insisted there is no issues with Liverpool star Cody Gakpo, and the two laughed off a small incident in their recent clash.

The two faced each other over the weekend as Gakpo started on Liverpool’s left and Timber was positioned at right-back for Arsenal.

They did battle throughout the game and had something of a heated exchange at one point when Timber was given a foul against him for shirt-pulling in an attempt to stop the Liverpool man escaping him.

He remonstrated with his Netherlands teammate and the referee, as did Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who was spotted showing his displeasure at the decision on the sidelines.

The incident was nothing more than a flash in the pan, a small exchange in a heated affair which Liverpool ended up winning 1-0 thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai’s superb last minute free kick.

And Timber insists that there was no lingering feelings, indeed, the pair were laughing about it on the flight to link up with the Netherlands squad for international duty.

“There was a brief incident between Cody and me,” he said.

“Mainly due to a misunderstanding. I was struggling with cramp. We both laughed about it on the plane to the Netherlands.

“No, Cody and I don’t fight. We’re close to each other, just like we are with all fourteen Premier League players in the Dutch national team. It’s nice to see teammates almost every league game.

“It makes the conversations in the Dutch national team more enjoyable. Although the defeat at Liverpool remains a bit of a stain. Still, I have complete confidence that with this Arsenal team, we can win the Premier League after two decades.”
