Arsenal expected to make January move for teenage defender

Arsenal face Nottingham Forest when the Premier League returns after the international break.

The Gunners started the season strongly, winning their first two games, before a narrow 1-0 defeat against reigning champions Liverpool last time out.

Mikel Arteta will expect to see his side pick up all three points when they host Forest, although winger Bukayo Saka will remain absent through injury.

In the meantime, it has emerged that the North London side could make a move to sign a teenage defender in the new year.

CaughtOffside claims that Arsenal are showing interest in Palmeiras’ Luis Benedetti and could make a move to sign the defender in January.

The report claims that the 19-year-old is attracting interest from several of Europe’s top clubs, including Spanish champions Barcelona.

Arsenal are said to have been watching the teenager for some time now, with the report suggesting that the London side are expected to make an official move to sign the player when the transfer window reopens in January.

Benedetti is a product of Palmeiras’ youth system and has now played nine times for the Brazilian side at senior level, having made his debut earlier this year.

He is contracted to his boyhood club until the end of 2029, but it appears that European clubs could attempt to lure him away from Brazil in the coming months.

Arsenal are said to perceive Benedetti as a player thats physicality could make him suitable for the Premier League, while Barcelona have identified the youngster as a candidate to bolster their backline.

The teenager was included in Palmeiras’ squad for the FIFA Club World Cup earlier this summer and featured among the substitutes in the quarter-finals against Chelsea, although he didn’t make an appearance at the tournament.
