76ers play-by-play announcer to make history as female calling NFL game

Philadelphia 76ers play-by-play announcer Kate Scott is set to make history when she calls a Pittsburgh Steelers game later this month.

The Athletic reports that Westwood One -- the official network audio broadcast partner of the NFL -- has assigned Scott as the play-by-play announcer for the Steelers vs. Vikings game on Sept. 28 in Dublin, Ireland.

When Scott calls that game, she will become the first female play-by-play announcer to call an NFL regular-season game for Westwood One. She will be partnered with former Vikings tight end and Notre Dame star Kyle Rudolph on the broadcast.

In addition to her role as the TV play-by-play announcer for the Philadelphia 76ers, Scott is also the preseason play-by-play announcer for the Seattle Seahawks. Now she is set to call her first regular-season NFL game with Westwood One.

“Kate did one of our US Soccer broadcasts this summer, and I was impressed with the way she quickly went back into radio mode despite doing mostly TV,” Westwood One vice president and executive producer Mike Eaby told The Athletic. “We needed an announcer for our NFL Dublin game and knowing that Kate does a terrific job on Seahawks preseason games and did a few 49ers preseason games on the radio in the past, she was an obvious choice.

“Dublin falls in Week 4 of the NFL season, so I knew it was before any of her Sixers stuff gets going. We’re looking for announcers who inform and entertain, and Kate excels at both.”

This is far from the first time that Kate Scott has made history as an announcer.

According to The Athletic, she was the first woman to call football games for the Pac-10 Network, was the first woman to call NFL games on the radio when she called 49ers preseason games in 2016 and was the play-by-play announcer for the first U.S. NHL broadcast produced solely by women.

She is also believed to be the only woman who has done play-by-play for NFL, NHL, NBA, Division I football and the Olympics, per The Athletic.

Now, she is set to add another first to her list of accomplishments.
