Man United failed to sign ex-Chelsea star

With the dust having settled after the transfer window, Premier League clubs will now be looking ahead to the competition’s return on 13 September.

All 20 top flight sides were busy over the summer, with plenty of notable incomings and outgoings.

Liverpool smashed the British transfer record to sign forward Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, while the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea also recruited heavily too.

It appears that the Red Devils also failed in an attempt to sign a former Chelsea star during the window.

According to Fabrizio Romano, United enquired about the availability of Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher, but were told he wasn’t available for a loan.

It is claimed that the Premier League side were hoping to add the England international to Ruben Amorim’s squad for the rest of the season, but the La Liga giants refused the proposal.

Gallagher, 25, joined Atleti from boyhood club Chelsea in 2024 having played 95 times for the West London outfit across all competitions.

The Englishman scored ten goals and provided the same number of assists during his time at Stamford Bridge.

He had previously spent time on loan at Crystal Palace, and Romano claims that the Eagles also had an attempt to sign the central midfielder on loan rebuffed last month.

Gallagher has played more than 50 times for Atletico since arriving in the Spanish capital, featuring in all three of their La Liga matches so far this term.

The midfielder is contracted to his current club until the end of the 2028/29 season, and Romano suggests that the Spanish side had no intention of allowing the player to leave on loan.
