Drake Maye is entering his sophomore season with the New England Patriots. There are a lot of changes the quarterback will face including a new coach, teammates and offensive coordinator.
For former Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer, he thinks Maye will benefit greatly from having Josh McDaniels in his here. Hoyer spent five seasons with McDaniels in New England, so he’s familiar with how the OC calls plays, and believes it will only help Maye’s development.
“A lot of places I’ve been, the play call just comes in, right?,” Hoyer said on “The Quick Snap” podcast. “Josh is going to give you as much information as he can: ‘Hey, remember on this play, we’re thinking if it’s man, we’re here, if it’s zone, we’re here.’ Or, ‘Hey, remember, if the front changes, we’ve got to alert out of this.’ He’s giving constant information.
Hoyer continued by saying this was something McDaniels did with every quarterback including Tom Brady.
McDaniels has a history of developing young quarterbacks. The success with Brady speaks for itself, and Mac Jones was a Pro Bowler under McDaniels.
Alex Van Pelt was New England’s offensive coordinator in 2024. He helped Maye clean up his footwork, but the UNC product admitted to Jason McCourty the two didn’t have a lot of in-game communication on the headset. But Hoyer is confident Maye will have more communication with McDaniels to help avoid a sophomore slump.
“The amount of benefit that Drake will have before the ball is snapped on every single play, because of not only the game plan going into it, but the information that’s being repeated to him before the ball is snapped, will do a lot for him in taking that ownership to the next level,” Hoyer said.
