Red Sox Reportedly Make Roster Decision On Struggling Reliever

The Boston Red Sox are unplugging Jordan Hicks.

Hicks is being placed on the injured list with a shoulder issue ahead of Friday’s series-opening game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. Underdog Fantasy’s Jared Carrabis was first to break the news regarding Hicks, who will not be eligible to return until Sept. 19.

It’s been a rough go of it for the veteran reliever…

Hicks has been horrific since being acquired as part of the Rafael Devers trade with the San Francisco Giants in June, allowing 17 earned runs across 21 appearances — including four earned runs that were allowed while recording just a single out in Wednesday’s blowout loss to the Cleveland Guardians.

Hicks is now rocking an 8.20 ERA.

“We’ve got to figure him out. We need him,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said on Wednesday. “That’s the bottom line. Because we’ve got (Garrett Whitlock) as a setup man, we need righties in the bullpen to do their job. We trust the ability but we have to execute.”

Chris Murphy will be recalled to replace Hicks, according to Cotillo.

Hicks’ status with club moving forward is rather murky, as it wouldn’t be surprising to see him fully unplugged for the remainder of the season — though he’s under control for two more seasons, earning $12 million in each, beyond 2025.
