Why Micah Parsons is ‘icing on the cake’ for Packers

All eyes will be on Micah Parsons and the Green Bay Packers’ defense this season.

Parsons arrives, following one of potentially the most impactful blockbuster trades over the past decade across the NFL, and could elevate the Packers into the Super Bowl conversation this season.

Pro Football Focus released its preseason NFL power rankings, with the Packers opening No. 6 in the league, and third in the NFC behind the Super Bowl champion Eagles and NFC North rival Detroit Lions.

“The Packers made the splash of the offseason,” Thomas Valentine writes for PFF. “With one of the biggest trades in recent NFL history just a week before the season, trading two first-round picks and interior defender Kenny Clark to the Dallas Cowboys for edge defender Micah Parsons. Parsons needs no introduction, but he enters the season coming off 70 pressures and 14 sacks in 13 games for the Cowboys and is a perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate.

“Parsons is the icing on the cake for an improving Packers defense, and the offense should once again be a top unit. They’re putting the pieces together for a Super Bowl run, but they need to improve upon a 1-5 record in the NFC North from a year ago.”

However, while there are folks inside the league who believe the Packers are in the mix for a Super Bowl, PFF gives Green Bay a mere five percent chance of hoisting the Lombardi next February.

Green Bay’s defense has the potential to improve exponentially this season, thanks to Parsons’ presence. Whether the trade leads to a championship will be the most important storyline for the Packers’ season ahead.
