Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish had a face-to-face meeting with Marc Guehi and his family following the cancellation of the defender's last-minute transfer to Liverpool Parish called off a £35million deal in the eleventh hour, with Guehi having already undergone part of his medical examination.

The Eagles' star was left seething after his dream move to Liverpool was put on hold while Palace manager Oliver Glasner made it clear he would consider leaving if his defender was sold. According to Sky Sports, Selhurst Park bossParish had a last-minute change of heart at 4pm.

Liverpool even submitted a deal sheet in an attempt to finalise the transfer before the 7pm deadline, but Guehi's camp were left frustrated as Palace's chairman had some explaining to do. It was reported that Guehi was contemplating stepping down as the club's captain after a disappointing end to the transfer window.

Glasner had wanted another central defender to join the squad before allowing Guehi to leave, despite the player having less than a year left on his contract. However, this didn't seem to hinder progress on a potential move on the final day of the window.

The south London team did manage to sign a defender on deadline day, with Jaydee Canvot joining from French side Toulouse. However, the 19 year old is not seen as a replacement for Palace's captain, reports the Mirror.

Speaking last weekend, Austrian manager Glasner, who threatened to resign from the club should Palace offload Guehi at the last moment, declared: "We need to keep Marc if we want to play a successful season.

"We have an agreement that if we're selling Marc we have the right replacement in. We wanted to have this replacement at the beginning of the pre-season.

"There's no replacement in the building, it's clear one part of the agreement is not fulfilled. That means we can't sell Marc.

"It's not a wish or a gift to Oliver Glasner, it's necessary for playing a successful season. It's a tempting situation but if we want to progress, we have to keep him. If we sell we accept a step back."

Liverpool are anticipated to make another approach for Guehi in January or next summer, when he becomes available on a free transfer. A tribute video celebrating the defender's stint had already been produced before his transfer fell through.
