The Seattle Seahawks and right tackle Abraham Lucas have agreed to terms on a three-year, $46 million contract extension that includes additional incentives, according to a report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo on Thursday morning.
Report: Seahawks reach extension with RT Abraham Lucas
Lucas, a 2022 third-round draft pick out of Washington State, was heading into the final year of his rookie deal and was set to become a free agent after this season.
Shortly after the report surfaced, former NFL quarterback Brock Huard reacted to the news on Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk. Here are four initial takeaways from Huard.
A good sign for Lucas’ health
After a strong rookie campaign in 2022, Lucas has been limited to 13 games over the past two seasons due to knee issues. But the the 6-foot-6, 322-pounder returned to start seven straight games down the stretch last season and has been healthy throughout this year’s training camp.
The extension indicates the Seahawks feel confident about Lucas’ status going forward.
“Nobody knows the car quite like the owner, so they know that knee better than anybody else does,” Huard said.
‘A pretty favorable deal’
Lucas’ extension has an average annual value of $15.33 million, which currently would rank 13th among NFL right tackles, according to OverTheCap.com. That could end up being a significant bargain for the Seahawks if Lucas ends up having a standout 2025 season.
“A bunch of right tackles have gotten signed over the last month, so you kind of knew where the market was,” Huard said. “And this is a pretty favorable deal.”
The importance of continuity
Continuity is important for any position group, but especially so for an offensive line. And by keeping Lucas is in the fold through at least 2027, Seattle’s young O-line has a chance to really build its chemistry.
“It lets them grow together,” Huard said. “Let (these guys) play together, and play together, and keep playing and growing together, because continuity is a great, great thing.”
A vote of confidence from Abe
As Huard pointed out, this also seems to indicate Lucas’ confidence in the Seahawks’ direction under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and new O-line coach John Benton.
“Abe Lucas is a very strong, opinionated (person) who knows what he wants,” Huard said. “There’s an authenticity to him. And for him to say, yeah, I kind of like this system. I kind of like this place. I kind of like where this thing is going. I kind of like this John Benton guy that everybody’s been raving about. … I think it’s a winner, winner, chicken dinner in every which way around.”
