Warriors Receive Unfortunate Jonathan Kuminga Update

The Golden State Warriors and free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga have not made any progress in contract negotiations, according to NBC Sports Bay Area's Dalton Johnson.

"Nothing is close between the Warriors and Kuminga, sources say, with both sides waiting for someone to blink first," Johnson writes.

The Warriors and Kuminga have been at a standstill for the entire offseason. As a restricted free agent, the 22-year-old doesn't have many favorable options.

Essentially, Kuminga has to decide between two routes. One option is to sign a two-year, $45 million deal with the Warriors. The contract includes a team option for the second year.

The second option for Kuminga is to accept the one-year, $7.9 million qualifying offer. While he would be taking a pay cut, this seems to be the more suitable option for the forward as he would be an unrestricted free agent after the 2025-26 season.

As for the Warriors, the team is vying for Kuminga to accept their $45 million deal rather than the qualifying offer.

"To ensure Kuminga doesn't sign the qualifying offer, which essentially would eliminate any option of trading him this season and severely hurt roster building, the Warriors will have to convince him what they're proposing is that much better than the last resort," Johnson added.

It appears neither side is ready to bite the bullet with the ongoing contract saga lasting into September. NBA training camp is in four weeks and the Oct. 1 deadline for Kuminga to accept the qualifying offer is less than a month away, so the clock is certainly ticking.

Kuminga is the Warriors' best trade asset as he averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 45.4 percent from the field and 30.5 percent from beyond the arc in 47 games last season.

The Warriors have yet to make a move in the offseason as the Kuminga situation has halted the team's remaining offseason plans.

It remains unclear how the story will unfold as the forward enters his fifth year in the NBA, but it's evident both the Warriors and Kuminga are unwilling to budge as the 2025-26 season quickly approaches.
