Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver target suddenly retires before start of season

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver and former free-agent Amari Cooper is suddenly retiring just days before the start of the NFL season, he told the team. The Pittsburgh Steelers were floated as a destination for Cooper before he inked a deal with the Raiders.

Cooper spent just ten days total with the Raiders before calling it a career. It comes after he had a down year with the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills. Cooper played in 154 career games and finished with over 10,000 receiving yards and 64 touchdowns.

Cooper, 30, had just 44 grabs for 547 yards and four touchdowns in 2024. It was a sharp decline from his 1250 yard output with the Browns in 2023. After that fall off, it seems that Cooper did not have the passion to play in the NFL any longer.

The Steelers never showed any outright interest in Cooper as a free agent. They have yet to add anyone new, and will head into the regular season with the players they had in training camp. Second-year wide receiver Roman Wilson has impressed over training and the preseason. That has at least given the Steelers short-term confidence to let the wide receivers they have prove if they can be the answers to their issues.
