Real Madrid’s Arda Güler delivered another eye-catching performance on the international stage as Turkey opened their European Championship campaign with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Georgia.
The 20-year-old midfielder was handed a start in his preferred No. 10 role and immediately set the tone. Within the first three minutes, Güler’s pinpoint delivery from a corner found Kerem Aktürkoğlu to put Turkey ahead, registering an early assist. His influence continued throughout the match, as he combined neatly in tight spaces and dictated attacking moves.
Güler’s fingerprints were also all over Turkey’s decisive third goal. It was his incisive pass in the buildup — the so-called “pre-assist” — that unlocked Georgia’s defense and paved the way for another Aktürkoğlu finish. By the time he was substituted in the 85th minute, Güler had completed 87.9% of his passes.
Turkey are, for now, top of Group E in World Cup qualifiers. Although, Spain — with Dani Carvajal and Dean Huijsen — will have a say about that as they play Bulgaria tonight and could top the table.
