EXCLUSIVE: Rodrygo sets new Real Madrid transfer deadline as Arsenal and Man City handed future hope

Rodrygo is set to assess his Real Madrid future in January, TBR Football understands, following links surrounding an exit over the summer transfer window.

The Brazilian winger was viewed as being out of favour in the early weeks of the Xabi Alonso era with Los Blancos, causing some Premier League teams to sit up and take notice.

Arsenal held an interest in Rodrygo, as they looked at options to strengthen the left flank, but they eventually settled on other options elsewhere.

Rumours surrounded some changes in Pep Guardiola’s side as well, leading to links with Rodrygo and Manchester City appearing, but they ultimately didn’t push through with a move.

Now, following his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu, there is an update surrounding his thoughts on Real Madrid and his future.

Rodrygo to reassess Real Madrid transfer possibility in January

It seemed as though Rodrygo would be leaving Real Madrid over the summer, after struggling to break into the team during the Club World Cup.

In the end, that move never came, and that may be down to the discussions he had with Vinicius Jr and Kylian Mbappe.

The Real Madrid star will reassess his future soon, though, as explained by TBR Football transfer expert Graeme Bailey.

He said on the situation: “I was speaking to his camp in Madrid… I’m told that Vinicius and Mbappe, who we did a story about a few weeks ago, encouraging him to stay, played a huge part in his decision.

“His teammates really put their arms around him and said, ‘Look, you’re a massive player here. You don’t need to leave.’ He’s decided to stay until January, but we’ll need to keep an eye on his situation.

“He’ll probably post on social media when he’s not playing and looks unhappy.

“We’ll see how he progresses because Ancelotti did warn him in the summer, even dropping him from the last [Brazil] squad, about limited game time.

“He’s giving it until January, and if he’s still not getting the minutes he needs, he may move in the January window. That said, he could also usurp Arda Güler and work his way back into the starting line-up.

“On deadline day, it was very quiet regarding Rodrygo. I think he just decided to stay, and obviously City and Arsenal were aware of that.

“Madrid were willing to do a deal if he wanted to go, so it was really all on the player — there was no point in bidding because the player had already made his intentions clear.”

It gives some future hope to both Arsenal and Man City, if they wish to make a move in January and fortunes don’t change for the winger.

However, the likelihood of either team dropping big money in the winter window is unclear, so it remains to be seen if either will put some money on the table if the opportunity comes around.

How has Rodrygo started this season with Real Madrid

So far this season, Rodrygo has played two out of three possible matches in La Liga, with one start and one appearance from the bench.

In total, the Brazilian has been handed 83 minutes of action, with no goals or assists to his name so far.

There was a role on the left wing for him against Real Oviedo, suggesting that he could move back to his favoured role.

However, it all depends on how the season really looks when it gets properly underway after the international break.

With the return of the Champions League thrown into the mix, the next few weeks and months will be a true indication of where Rodrygo sits in the club’s plans and whether a transfer exit could be on the cards.
