Eagles elevate recently cut Patriots veteran for season opener

FOXBOROUGH — A little over a week after being released by the Patriots, Marcus Epps will be suiting up for the Eagles in the NFL season opener.

The 29-year-old defensive back landed on Philadelphia’s practice squad and has been elevated for Thursday night’s game against the Cowboys.

Disappointed with his role in Foxborough, Epps reportedly asked to be released, but Mike Vrabel pushed back on that notion in a press conference after cutdown day.

Here’s the full back-and-forth after it was reported that Epps and Kendrick Bourne both asked to be cut:

Q: When players request a release, how do you determine whether to grant that release or say, “Too bad, you’re sticking around?”

Vrabel: “I don’t know who you’re referring to, I guess, specifically.”

Q: [Marcus] Epps and [Kendrick] Bourne.

Vrabel: “Yeah, that’s news to me. I mean, I think that we just, again, try to put the roster together. I guess when it when it doesn’t work out, you break up with somebody, your girlfriend doesn’t want to be with you, and then you say, ‘Well, I don’t want to be with you either.’ I’m not going to get into all that.”

Whatever the circumstances surrounding the breakup, Epps will be in an Eagles uniform on Thursday night.
