The NFL and Donald Trump have had an interesting relationship over the years. It seemed to have blossomed into a big time friendship when Trump became the first sitting President to ever attend the Super Bowl in February.
However, sides have soured a tad, and now the President is being blamed for a horrible change to the league this year.

In a controversial 2025 NFL broadcast announcement, a sitting US governor blamed President Trump for commercials being added to NFL Redzone:
RedZone host Scott Hanson announced on Wednesday, September 3 that we’ll have commercials this year. Hanson, who has been hosting the 7-hour NFL games broadcast since 2009, made the announcement Wednesday on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
The RedZone channel, which features non-stop coverage of NFL games from 1 p.m. E.T. until the 4 p.m. E.T. window games are over, previously referred to its broadcast as “seven hours of uninterrupted football.” That slogan will now have to change.
“When you see me come on the air, we’re gonna hit the Octobox. We’ve got eight games in the early window, taking you around to all the different cities. And then when we get into it, ‘Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s been more than 250 days since the first full NFL Sunday, but we are back. And seven hours of RedZone football starts now,” Hanson told McAfee.
NFL fans have been blaming different people for the RedZone announcement. Some have incorrectly blamed ESPN, though the network had nothing to do with it, according to multiple reports media insiders. Others have been blaming NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
But one U.S. politician is blaming President Trump.

On Wednesday night, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul took to X to blame President Trump for the RedZone announcement.
“More commercials, less football. Trump’s America. @NFL and @espn : You have time to fix this!” she wrote to her 280,000 followers.

President Trump, obviously, is not actually to blame for the RedZone decision. Neither, apparently, is ESPN.
But who is?
According to multiple sports media insiders, it’s the NFL’s call.
“The plan is to space a limited number of ads throughout the 7+ hours of the show,” Richard Deitsch of The Athletic wrote.
“Viewers will hear the audio of the ads but the other box will show NFL RedZone.”
The move had reportedly been contemplated for a while now.
“This move has been contemplated and tested for over a year now, and is completely unrelated to the recent news regarding ESPN and the NFL,” he wrote.
Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season will get underway on Thursday night, when the Cowboys take on the Eagles.
Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. E.T. on NBC
An update from the NFL:
• The plan is to space a limited number of ads throughout the 7+ hours of the show.
• Double-box ads.
•Viewers will hear the audio of the ads but the other box will show NFL RedZone
