Ex-Cowboys coach ‘shocked’ by Micah Parsons trade

Micah Parsons being traded from the Dallas Cowboys to the Green Bay Packers last week stunned the NFL community — including a former Cowboys coach.

Former Dallas head coach Jason Garrett, now with NBC’s NFL coverage team, shared his thoughts on the Parsons move ahead of Thursday’s game between the Eagles and Cowboys.

“I was shocked,” Garrett said when asked about last week’s blockbuster deal. “You can’t let that guy outside the building. He’s an elite, elite player. The best pass-rusher in the league. The most disruptive defensive player over the last four years.”

Garrett never coached Parsons. He was fired by the Cowboys after the 2019 season. Parsons was drafted by Dallas with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. But Garrett did have to game plan against Parsons as the New York Giants’ offensive coordinator in 2021.

Parsons being dealt sent shockwaves through the football world. After contract negotiations stalled with Jerry Jones and the Cowboys, the former Penn State star was sent to the Packers in exchange for two first-round picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark. Parsons then signed a four-year, $188 million deal, making him the highest-paid non-QB in NFL history.

The Cowboys will miss Parsons on Thursday when they open the 2025 season against the Eagles, who reportedly made a “strong play” to acquire the four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher.

Imagine what Garrett and the NFL world would have said if Dallas dealt Parsons to Philly.
