Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker named captain with new team

Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Robert Spillane has been named a captain with the New England Patriots. Spillane earned a huge three-year contract from the Patriots to come over from the Las Vegas Raiders.

Spillane got a three-year, $37.5 million deal from the Patriots, becoming one of their key stalwarts in the middle of the defense.

The captainship is now just a cherry on top, and a sign that Patriots players see Spillane as one of the top players on their team and a tone setter.

The 28-year-old Spillane played for the Steelers from 2019 to 2022, going from a special teamer on the roster fringe to a legitimate starter. He earned a two-year, $7 million contract in the 2023 offseason and had become a key piece for the Raiders in the middle of their defense. Now, he earns a huge payday to go along with his high level of play.

Spillane had 91 solo tackles and led the NFL in run stops this season. He played in all 17 games for the Raiders alongside Divine Deablo to stabilize the second level for Las Vegas.
