The Dinos are coming off a 43-36 overtime loss to the reigning Hardy Cup champions Regina. The Dinos trailed 24-10 at the break, but saw their youthful offence start to string things together in the second half, nearly pulling off a big comeback win.

First-year quarterback David Jordan settled in nicely, finishing with 238 yards passing and three touchdowns — all in the second half — as he and fellow rookie Jet Zakrzewski took all the snaps.

The Bisons dropped their opener, 21-9, at UBC.

Field Hockey

The Dinos’ field hockey season gets underway this weekend as UBC visits Hawkings Field for a pair of games both Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m.

With a full year under her belt, Calgary’s second-year head coach Jenn Beagan is excited about this year’s squad. Despite having just five players on the 22-player roster who are third-years or older, there is an added energy and attitude.

One of those veterans is fourth-year defender Isabella Green, who has been named a First Team All-Canadian each of the past two seasons after earning U SPORTS Rookie of the Year honours in 2022.

Women’s Soccer

The Dinos (2-0) host two games at McMahon Stadium. It’s an early heavyweight showdown in Saturday’s home opener as MacEwan (2-0) comes to campus before Alberta (1-0-1) visits Sunday. Both games are set to kick off at noon.

It was an incredible start to the season for the Dinos, spearheaded by an offensive outburst from Brooke Batty. The second-year forward tied tied the program record with four goals in a game as Calgary won 6-0 at Regina, then added two more in a 2-0 victory at Saskatchewan.

Batty’s shooting percentage is still a perfect 1.000, and both her goal and points (seven) totals are by far the early leaders in both Canada West and U SPORTS.

Men’s Soccer

Following a six-point road weekend, the Dinos (3-1) return home for a single game this weekend — the annual derby with rival Mount Royal (3-0-1) on Saturday at McMahon following the women’s match.

After Owen Antoniuk netted all five Dinos goals on the opening weekend, it was Soliman Aria scoring a pair last weekend, while brothers Gianmarco Plenzik and Joey Plenzik both tallied one goal each in wins at Lethbridge (3-2) and Sasktachewan (1-0). Hany Shafie was also big in the net for his first clean sheet.

Rugby

The women’s squad travels to Victoria for a match on Saturday (2 p.m.).

The young Dinos showed a lot of grit in nearly earning a comeback win over Alberta in the season opener before falling 29-17.

Saturday’s contest is the 15th edition of the Jenny Vincent Memorial Game, remembering the life of Jenny Vincent, who coached both programs and was the driving force behind obtaining varsity status for the Dinos women’s rugby program.
