Chase Young #99 of the New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints downgraded defensive end Chase Young on Thursday’s injury report, raising doubts about his status for Sunday’s opener. Young, dealing with a calf injury from Wednesday’s practice, was listed as “Did Not Participate” after being limited the previous day.

Midweek setbacks often signal a problem for game day availability. Asked if the issue could linger, Young dismissed long-term concerns. Saints insider Nick Underhill reported that while Young couldn’t provide a date for his return, he expects to be back soon.

Saints Sign Garrett Nelson to Practice Squad

To add depth at defensive end, the Saints signed Garrett Nelson to their practice squad on Thursday and released quarterback Hunter Dekkers to make room.

Nelson, 25, played at Nebraska before short stints with Miami, San Antonio in the UFL, Cincinnati, and Denver. He impressed in the Broncos’ preseason but was released in their final roster cuts. Nelson also has experience at off-ball linebacker, but should join Fadil Diggs, Jonah Williams, and Eku Leota in the edge-rush rotation.

“Ideally, Nelson can help practice run smoothly for a week or two while Young rests up, giving guys like Diggs the opportunities they need,” said Saints Wire’s John Sigler.

Other Saints on the Injury Report

The rest of Thursday’s injury report provided a mixed bag for the Saints. Defensive tackle Khristian Boyd was upgraded to full participation after being limited the day before with a hand injury. Cornerback Alontae Taylor and safety Jordan Howden were both limited for the second straight practice, dealing with groin and oblique issues. Offensive lineman Trevor Penning remained out with a toe injury, raising concern about the depth of the offensive line heading into the opener.

On the other side, the Arizona Cardinals also had several players listed. Defensive lineman Dante Stills did not practice due to a heel injury, while linebacker Owen Pappoe and guard Will Hernandez were limited. Guard Jon Gaines II was able to practice fully despite a thumb problem. Both teams are hoping for cleaner reports on Friday, but each will enter the weekend with uncertainty around key contributors.

Outlook for the Opener

If Young cannot play, the Saints will lean more heavily on veterans Cameron Jordan, Carl Granderson, and Chris Rumph II. They could also accelerate the roles of rookies Diggs and Leota, while keeping Nelson available as insurance. That group has the talent to generate pressure, but the absence of Young, a former Defensive Rookie of the Year, would remove one of the defense’s most explosive pieces.

Penning’s status is another subplot to monitor. If the young tackle cannot play, the Saints may need to shuffle their offensive line, potentially testing depth early in the season. The Cardinals have invested heavily in their defensive front, and any weakness in protection could affect Spencer Rattler’s rhythm and timing in the passing game.

Friday’s final designations will clarify the picture. The team has stressed the injury is not expected to be serious, but the timing leaves little room for error. With both teams aiming to set the tone for their seasons, every piece of roster health could shape the outcome on Sunday.
