Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa has claimed that PSR ‘killed’ Aston Villa in the transfer window, something Newcastle United benefited from.
PSR has been cruel to several Premier League clubs in recent years.
Newcastle United seriously struggled in 2024, but are in a much better position with PSR following recent financial accounts, which confirmed a turnover of £320m and welcomed lucrative new partnerships like Adidas.
Aston Villa are now struggling with PSR and have been forced to make some reluctant decisions to turn a profit. One of those was selling Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle for £43m in the summer.
With the damage already done, Konsa has launched a scathing rant on PSR and what the summer transfer window means for Villa.

Jacob Ramsey criticises PSR after Newcastle United sign Jacob Ramsey
The 2024 summer transfer window was ultimately deemed a failure after Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell was unable to make any senior signings, while two promising young players were sold to help the club get out of a £60m blackhole.
Newcastle are now taking advantage of clubs that are struggling to comply with PSR. Ramsey has looked sharp since signing for the Magpies in August, and has been given the backing of pundits like Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane.
Villa are yet to score a goal in the 2025/26 season after their PSR struggles, and Konsa has not held back on how he feels about their current situation.

“Yeah, it is crazy,” he told the Mirror I don’t understand it myself, but from the outside looking in, it doesn’t look too good. I know that. I know it’s really killed us this transfer window.
“We’re going to have to deal with what we’ve got now. Like I say, we’ve a great squad, I believe in our squad. I believe in our manager. Hopefully the boys who have come in can really help us and push us on.”
PSR is the thing of the past for Newcastle United after summer transfers
After the disaster that was the 2024 summer transfer window, and arguably the 2025 January window, Newcastle fans have breathed a sigh of relief following their busy transfer window.
Under the watchful eye of Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s recruitment team made six senior signings and added more quality to their academies. The transfer record was broken with the arrival of Nick Woltemade, but the biggest deal of the summer was undoubtedly a departure from Tyneside.
Newcastle sold Alexander to Liverpool for £125m, a deal which could see the Magpies not have to worry about PSR for the next couple of years.
Reports suggest that Isak’s sale is ‘transformative’ for Newcastle, and that they will now be able to make multiple marquee signings in the upcoming transfer windows.
The club record sale confirmed they had almost doubled their money, which is a major positive for PSR. Adding Sean Longstaff’s £15m move to Leeds United in July, Newcastle fans can sleep easily about their financial stance.
