£15m Leeds United summer recruit sends defiant transfer message after slow start to the season

It has been a slow start to life at Elland Road for Jaka Bijol. The big centre-back has made just one appearance for Leeds United since arriving from Udinese in a £15m deal back in June.

Bijol is still waiting to make his Premier League debut. The 26-year-old was suspended for their Premier League opener at home to Everton and was an unused substitute in their clashes with Arsenal and Newcastle United.

Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk have been paired together at the back, helping the Whites record two clean sheets and pick up four points. Bijol has started just once and looked rusty alongside fellow new boy Sebastiaan Bornauw in their disappointing Carabao Cup loss to Sheffield Wednesday.

United entered the international break on the back of a goalless draw with the Magpies and Bijol is currently away with his national team. Slovenia are preparing to face Sweden and Switzerland in World Cup qualifiers. Bijol says Slovenia are relishing the challenge of facing Sweden tonight.

Speaking to Slovenia daily newspaper Dnevnik ahead of the clash, Bijol said: “We are ready for a tough test, and with the support of Stožice [home stadium], we can achieve a very good result. The atmosphere has been very good for some time now.

“Two games on the bench (at Leeds) is no big deal. I haven’t had a real chance to earn minutes at Leeds yet. Give me a little more time to show what I can do.

“All the guys are full of confidence, also because of our previous achievements. We know we can play with anyone. We are ready for a tough opponent. If we help each other, we are confident we can stop them.”
