The transfer window may not be closed, but that doesn’t stop talk over possible signings at Manchester United, with targets continuing to be named.
The latest of them is Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo. Journalist Duncan Castles revealed on The Transfers Podcast that Semenyo was aggressively targeted by United in the summer window , with a £55 million deal on the cards. However, the player reportedly in the end opted to sign a new deal with his current club.
The forward has gone on to score three times in the first three Premier League games this season, including a brace in the season opener against Liverpool.
His addition would have added further to United’s attack, alongside the summer arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, with Ruben Amorim having plenty of options to choose from. With Semenyo also able to play a central role, his addition may have meant that Chido Obi would have been allowed to go out on loan in search of more game time.
It’s not just attack where United were looking to add players this summer. The club also targeted Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba, but came up against a firm not for sale stance from the Eagles.
It is now however claimed that United had agreed personal terms with Baleba over a move, and their interest is expected to be reignited in the future. Adam Wharton is another player who United have been credited with an interest in and would strengthen their midfield options.
If both players completed a move to Old Trafford, it would have allowed United to grant Kobbie Mainoo’s wish of going out on loan. The midfielder stayed at United beyond the deadline despite asking to move away on a temporary deal.
The third area that United could have strengthened more is the goalkeeping department. The club did complete the deadline day signing of Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens, but the step up to first choice at Old Trafford could be difficult.
The signing of Emi Martinez, who was heavily linked with a move to United in the final days of the window would have likely seen him go in as first choice. That would have allowed United to move Andre Onana on, with them having confidence with the options they have.
Here’s a look at what the dream squad could look like with the seven incoming and outgoing transfers.
