Brazilian media react to Casemiro performance in World Cup qualifier vs Chile, early return to Man Utd possible

Casemiro helped a new-look Brazil side in a World Cup qualifier against Chile.

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro was recalled to the Brazil squad earlier this year after a two-year absence.

This coincided with the appointment of his former Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, who has total faith in the veteran midfielder, knowing exactly what he is capable of.

Manchester United paid £60 million to sign Casemiro in 2022 after his performances under the Italian.

Casemiro rejected chances to leave United this summer, believing he has the best platform to succeed and play a part for his country at the 2026 World Cup.

Ancelotti named Casemiro as a starter in their World Cup qualifying matchup against Chile, with Brazil powering to a 3-0 home victory.

How Casemiro fared for Brazil

Brazil’s 3-0 win was led by goals from three Premier League players, Chelsea’s Estevao, West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta, and Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes.

Paqueta scored in the 71st minute, five minutes after replacing Manchester United’s Casemiro.

Casemiro had received a yellow card and Ancelotti was keen not to take any risks, with Brazil only 1-0 up at the time he was taken off.

Before his substitution, Casemiro had attempted three shots, one of which was on target, while managing 77 touches in total as Brazil dominated possession.

The yellow card means Casemiro faces a suspension as it is his third of the qualifying campaign, and will miss Brazil’s next game against Bolivia.

Brazilian newspaper Globo gave the Manchester United midfielder a 6/10 rating, before commenting on the positives and negatives from his performance.

“He played a key role in Brazil’s crushing first-half performance, with interceptions and tackles that gave Chile no breathing room.

“He produced some excellent through balls and even scored a disallowed header.

“Late in the first half, he committed a hard foul, risked being sent off, received a yellow card, and is out of the match against Bolivia.”

UOL Esporte remarked that Casemiro was lucky not to receive a red card for his careless challenge at the end of the first half.

“The card was yellow out of the referee’s generosity”, said columnist Juca Kfouri.

Casemiro recall possible

Now it is being reported by Globo that Manchester United could recall Casemiro early from the Brazil squad due to his suspension.

Casemiro was reportedly desperate to avoid a booking so he could play a part against Bolivia, and wants to stay around the squad.

But with Carlo Ancelotti already lining up a replacement, Casemiro fears he will be called back early by his club.

Manchester United are preparing for a crucial derby away at Manchester City days later on Sunday September 14.

It is a benefit for United that Casemiro now won’t be playing away at the high-altitude stadium in Bolivia on the preceding Wednesday.

And it is quite probable now that Casemiro may not make the trip at all, and make a swift return to Carrington.

While the veteran’s contract expires next summer, Casemiro still has a part to play for United too amid a lack of midfield options.
