Joao Pedro explains Newcastle United transfer decision ahead of £60m Chelsea move

Chelsea forward Joao Pedro has revealed why he opted to join the Blues rather than Newcastle United during the summer transfer window. The 23-year-old secured a summer switch from Brighton and Hove Albion to Chelsea in a deal potentially worth up to £60 million.

He has made an immediate impression at Stamford Bridge, netting twice and contributing two assists across his opening three Premier League appearances for the Blues. Chelsea weren't the sole suitors for the player during the summer transfer window.

Newcastle United also pursued Pedro, though their £50m offer proved unsuccessful, before the player made it evident that he was determined to join Chelsea. Prior to his Brighton move in 2023, Pedro spent three seasons playing on the outskirts of London with Watford.

And it appears that returning to the capital played a significant role in his latest transfer choice. "When I was in Brighton, I was missing London a little bit," he told the Standard regarding his decision to sign for Chelsea over Newcastle.

"I had a chance to move to another club, but I chose Chelsea because it's in London, it's a big club, and I knew in my head it was the right move."

The Magpies were seeking attacking additions throughout the transfer window amid uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak's future. The striker ultimately secured a £125m deadline day transfer to Liverpool. Chelsea, on the other hand, bolstered their attacking line-up with Pedro joining Jamie Gittens, Alejandro Garnacho, Liam Delap and Esteveo as the fresh faces in the forward line during the summer transfer window.

"Everyone knows this is a big club with a great history," Pedro stated upon confirmation of his move to Stamford Bridge. "They had brilliant players in the past and have brilliant players now. "So I am excited to join and you know when you are a Chelsea player you must think one thing - win."
