The Boston Red Sox showed last offseason that they’re still capable of bringing in superstar talent. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow went out and snagged Alex Bregman in February, a couple months after trading for Garrett Crochet. Both players have been — for the most part — massive successes in their debut Red Sox seasons.
The upcoming free agency period features plenty of star power, and it’ll be fascinating to see how involved Breslow and Boston’s brass gets. Of course, much of that will depend upon the outcome of the current season, not to mention what ends up happening with Bregman, who is expected to opt out of his contract.
New York Post’s Jon Heyman fanned the flames of free agency speculation on Friday by releasing his list of the top 25 upcoming free agents, along with predictions about where each guy will land.
Bregman was No. 2 on Heyman’s list, and it should be noted that Heyman said of Bregman that, “he fits Boston beautifully.”
Interestingly, Heyman featured the Red Sox as a landing spot for at least four additional superstars!

Kyle Tucker (Chicago Cubs)
“An incredibly consistent 29-year-old all-around talent who might be priced out of Chicago,” Heyman wrote. “Landing spots: Dodgers, Giants, Red Sox, Cubs.”
Bo Bichette (Toronto Blue Jays)

“The hit machine could also transition to 3B or 2B,” Heyman wrote. “Rangers, Red Sox, Tigers, Angels, Dodgers, Jays.”
Kyle Schwarber (Philadelphia Phillies)
Heyman: “The Phillies want to keep their MVP candidate. Phillies, Cubs, Red Sox.”

Pete Alonso (New York Mets)
Heyman: “He’s having an excellent year and can’t receive another qualifying offer. Would the Mets would go long now? Mets, Red Sox, Astros, Rangers, Mariners, Yankees, Angels.”
None of the above four players seem that likely for Boston. Schwarber has Red Sox ties, of course, but you have to expect that Philly will do everything in its power to retain him.

Bichette is an interesting name to watch, mainly with Trevor Story aging (and also capable of opting out!), but then again, Boston already has a stud infielder on ice in Marcelo Mayer.
