This offseason, the New York Giants had a void to fill at the quarterback position. They addressed this in multiple ways, bringing in veteran options and a prospect to develop long-term.
After drafting Abdul Carter, the Giants traded back into the first round to secure Ole Miss standout Jaxson Dart. While the organization is high on him, they aren't rushing things with him.
Instead of giving Dart the keys right away, New York signed Russell Wilson in free agency to provide some stability and serve as a bridge under center.

Wilson isn't the Super Bowl-winning QB he was in Seattle, but he is still a viable option. He is coming off a stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers where he went 6-5 and threw for 2,482 yards as a starter.
Russell Wilson slighted in recent NFL quarterback pyramid
While the Giants feel Wilson can be an upgrade for them at quarterback, FS1's Nick Wright feels otherwise. Given his recent history, he feels the veteran's best days are long behind him.
Ahead of the 2025 season, Wright provided an updated version of his QB pyramid. As expected, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson are at the top. Meanwhile, Wilson finds himself in the very last slot. Those just ahead of him include JJ McCarthy, Bryce Young, and Michael Penix.
His recent track record doesn't jump off the page, but a case can be made for Wilson to be slightly higher on this pyramid. A handful of the younger players ahead of him still have things to prove in the NFL. Given his overall resumé, the Giants QB could climb a handful of spots.

Brian Daboll named Wilson the Giants' starter during training camp, and the pressure is on for him to perform well. Many have already pushed the narrative that Dart should be starting, and the chatter only got louder when the rookie performed well in preseason.
If Wilson stumbles out of the gates, Daboll's hand might be forced to hand the reins over to Dart.
On top of a budding prospect being behind him on the depth chart, Wilson also has to think about his future. Seeing that Dart is the Giants' future, his time in New York will likely be brief. Knowing this, he has to use this season as an audition to hopefully land a new starting job in 2026 and beyond.
Armed with promising young talent, Wilson has pieces around him to succeed. He'll get his first chance to showcase his worth on Sunday against the Washington Commanders.
