FOXBOROUGH — Over the course of his rookie season, Drake Maye didn’t throw a pass to anybody with the pedigree of Stefon Diggs.
The four-time Pro Bowler had notched six straight 1000-yard seasons prior to the ACL tear that derailed him last fall. When he arrived in Foxbrough this spring, Diggs’ resume spoke for itself.
Even coming off the knee injury, Patriots quarterbacks coach Ashton Grant believes having a wideout as established as Diggs will do wonders for a young quarterback like Maye.
“It’s a security blanket,” Grant said. “You just have confidence knowing you can get to the ball to someone who is proven in this league. I think Diggs does a good job going out there and proving to Drake every day that he should have confidence in him. I think he’s done that every rep he’s had since he’s been here. So it’s been helpful for the quarterback room.”
After connecting with Diggs at training camp this summer, Maye is excited to see how that chemistry shows up in Sunday’s season opener against the Raiders.
“It’s been awesome to bond with such a high-level player,” Maye said this week. “I think it’s going to continue to show as the game week and game day come closer and closer is kind of how much he’s elevating his game and elevating his practice style. So, I’m looking forward to getting out there with him on Sunday. I think you’ll see good energy from Stef, and I’m looking forward to getting him the rock and letting him do his thing.”
