Sol Campbell says £63m Man City player has achieved something truly ‘amazing’

Sol Campbell has admitted that he thinks a member of Manchester City’s squad has just done something amazing in the Premier League.

The start of the 2025/26 campaign has not got off to the start Pep Guardiola’s team would have wanted, losing two of their first three league matches; however, there are some positives to be taken away from the opening phase of the season.

Tijjani Reijnders has impressed many pundits and fans, Erling Haaland looks to be back in form after a tough season last time around, and John Stones is back to a level where he can contribute effectively to City’s success.

Another is the return of Rodri to the starting line-up last time out at Brighton; however, that fact brought an end to an incredible record.

Sol Campbell congratulates Rodri on his unbeaten run

Rodri returned to a Premier League starting XI for the first time since last September against Brighton, after the Man City star suffered a serious ACL injury.

Before that huge setback, the 2024 Ballon d’Or put an incredible run together, which saw the £63m star go 49 games unbeaten in the Premier League when he has been in the starting XI.

The defeat at Brighton brought that to an end, which leaves Rodri short of Sol Campbell’s record of 56 games, and the former Arsenal defender has now responded to this with a message on social media.

“It was an amazing effort; it was close but not close enough,” Campbell wrote on his X account.

This is unlikely to bother the 29-year-old, whose main focus now will be to get back to his best level, as Tim Howard is one of many who believe Rodri is one of the most important people at Man City.

Rodri made a big Man City admission after Brighton defeat

After his first start for Man City this season, Rodri became aware that it will take time for Guardiola’s men to reach their best level, as he believes it will take time for the Manchester club’s new signings to settle in.

“We’re missing the level, I don’t know, call it what you want. It’s a matter of the team, changes, new players have to adapt and when you change the team that much, it is difficult. This is our reality, it’s not excuses,” the midfielder said.

Man City don’t have the time to wait for their new stars to bed in as they are already six points behind Liverpool, and their next match is the Manchester derby against Man United.

Guardiola will hope the current international break will do some of his players the world of good, as he will need them close to their best when they return to Premier League action next weekend.
