Surprise club emerge as 'leading contenders' for Man United's Malacia

Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia could reportedly make the move to Lausanne Sport.

The Dutchman was heavily linked with a move away from the 20-time English champions during the summer transfer window, with Elche, at one stage, believed to be close to signing him.

A proposed move to the Spanish outfit broke down, though, and he remains at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old is not in Ruben Amorim's plans at Man United, and the club are working to move him on, potentially on loan, even though his contract with the English giants is due to expire next summer.

According to transfer expert Graeme Bailey, in comments to United In Focus, Lausanne Sport have emerged as contenders for Malacia, who is a nine-time Netherlands international.

“That is the plan for sure – there are still a few windows open – I am told one to watch might be United’s sister INEOS club Lausanne, but there are a few options for him," said Bailey.

Man United minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe also owns Lausanne Sport via his INEOS company, so there is now a close link between the Swiss outfit and the Premier League club.

As a result, a move should, in theory, be straightforward to complete, providing that all parties are in favour.

Man United loaned new signing Enzo Kana-Biyik to Lausanne Sport over the summer after signing the 18-year-old from Le Havre, and he has made one appearance this season.

Malacia spent the second half of the 2024-25 campaign on loan at PSV Eindhoven, making 12 appearances, but the Dutch outfit turned down the chance to sign him on a permanent basis.

What has gone wrong for Malacia at Man United?

Malacia had an encouraging first season at Man United following a switch from Feyenoord, featuring on 39 occasions in 2022-23.

The defender missed the entire 2023-24 season with a serious knee injury, though, and he then only made eight appearances for the Red Devils in the first half of the 2024-25 campaign before departing on loan.

Malacia did manage to prove his fitness back at PSV, and there are thought to have been Premier League clubs looking at him over the summer, but nothing came from it.

The defender has also been linked with moves to Turkey and Saudi Arabia, and the expectation is that he will leave the 20-time English champions at some stage in September.
