Newcastle United star Dan Burn has insisted he is playing the best football of his career - with the 6ft 7in warrior knowing he will need to maintain it to keep Eddie Howe's defensive options on the sidelines.

Howe almost compromised against Leeds United by playing a five-man defensive rearguard to keep Burn, Fabian Schar and Sven Botman happy but reverted to a flat back four in the second half.

Blyth lad Burn knows he has Botman and Malick Thiaw breathing down his neck with Schar and Jamaal Lascelles also vying for places.

Speaking from the England camp ahead of his third appearance for his country, Burn said: "On a personal level, I am probably playing the best football of my career. I am in a good place physically and mentally, where I am up for the challenge.

"Eddie [Howe] is relentless in the way that he works. He leaves no stone unturned. When I go in, I know exactly what I need to do."

Burn came from nowhere to win his first cap at the age of 32 last March when he debuted for his country in the 2-0 win over Albania at Wembley, days after lifting the Carabao Cup at the same venue.

He said: "I think the first camp it was amazing to be there. But I feel the more camps I go on now, I feel more confident in your ability to play at this level.

"It is sort of the unknown when you come here, until you play a game, you don't know if you can do it. But now that I have done it, I feel like I should be here and deserve a place. We are not only competing to make the World Cup with two important qualifiers, but also with each other.

"There's been players in and out of different camps, but now it is about competing with players in my position to nail down the place. There is sort of a lot of depth and there are big players in my position and I want to be the one to play all the games."
