Newcastle United signed Aaron Ramsdale over the summer to compete with Nick Pope.
Nick Pope envisages retiring at Newcastle United despite Eddie Howe pursuing a goalkeeper over the summer.
It is well documented that the Magpies liked James Trafford before his last-minute switch to Manchester City. A move to St James’ Park was on until Etihad chiefs activated his buy-back clause in the dying seconds.
Newcastle ultimately moved for Aaron Ramsdale on a season-long loan to cast further doubt over Pope’s future. The 33-year-old has started the opening three games of the season but faces seasoned Premier League competition.
Nick Pope on transfer noise
Speaking to The Chronicle, Pope - in line to make his 100th club appearance against Barcelona later this month - shut down talk of any animosity following Newcastle’s goalkeeper pursuit. He said: "There will always be goalkeepers linked with Newcastle, whoever it is, that is part of the game.
“You can only ever focus on yourself and what is best for yourself and the team at the time. It was always far from my thoughts to leave, but there was no doubt in my mind about playing for anyone but Newcastle United.
“I know Aaron from England, he is a good lad and a good keeper. He is coming in to improve the squad. He is a good character and the last few years that is what we have been built on, that is our squad."
Newcastle United retirement vow
Pope also hinted he could retire at Newcastle while looking ahead to the Champions League. He added: "I could quite easily finish my career with Newcastle, I don't want to sound like an idiot but I feel like I am a really good goalkeeper and have played a lot of Premier League games.
“I know myself and I am looking forward to things now. We go into the Champions League again and that's where I want to play.”
