Buffalo Bills coach provides injury update on WR Keon Coleman and kicker situation

Orchard Park, N.Y. — Buffalo Bills wide receiver Keon Coleman popped up on the Wednesday injury report with a groin injury, creating concern about his status for the season opener against the Ravens.

Bills coach Sean McDermott discussed the origin of the injury before Friday’s practice. Coleman was seen on the practice field and is expected to be limited for a third straight day. McDermott said that he feels good about Coleman’s chances of playing Sunday, but he wants to see how he does in practice.

Coleman started experiencing soreness in his groin during training camp, McDermott said. The Bills had several receivers go down during camp, which forced Coleman to take the brunt of the reps for a period of time. He dealt with the injury for most of the summer, but he had a flare-up this week that landed him on the injury report.

The Bills look to be at full strength at receiver if Coleman can play. Veteran slot receiver Khalil Shakir was a full participant in practice on Thursday as he seems all the way back from a training camp high ankle sprain. Veterans Curtis Samuel and Elijah Moore both missed time for personal reasons over the past week, but McDermott said both are ready to go for this weekend.

Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White and kicker Tyler Bass didn’t practice on Friday. Bass started the week as a limited participant on Wednesday, but began experiencing soreness. He was held out of practice on Thursday, and the Bills signed veteran kicker Matt Prater to their practice squad as insurance.

White hasn’t practiced since Aug. 21, and if he can’t play, rookie cornerback Dorian Strong or veteran backup Ja’Marcus Ingram could get the opportunity to start opposite Christian Benford.

“Yeah, two younger players,” McDermott said. “Ja’Marcus played last year for us, did a nice job. Dorian is newer to the fold. Both are working extremely hard, and we have a lot of confidence in both of them.”
