Opinion: David Moyes still needs to solve major issue at Everton, it will take an appointment

Despite Everton looking like a rejuvenated club, David Moyes still faces a few issues with one needing to be solved.

Moyes has just about done everything right in his second spell with Everton so far.

Their form in the Premier League this campaign is showing that at the moment, the Toffees are looking like the best of the rest.

Alan Shearer thinks Everton can challenge the top eight, as the Scotsman has brought back the feeling of the Blues competing for Europe once again.

However, to go up another level, the club must sort out a problem that the manager hasn’t been able to nail down yet.

Everton still need a set-piece coach after Charlie Adam fiasco

With the Toffees almost looking like the complete package, what has been lacking from the Sean Dyche era is set pieces, as Everton are one of four clubs without a specialist coach in this area.

It’s been a big change in performances with quality on the up, but the difference between set-piece success from Moyes’ predecessor says it all.

It’s something that the Blues manager has tried to correct, as Charlie Adam was appointed set-piece coach last season, but ultimately his six-month tenure was a failure.

Fans wanted Adam gone after his impact on the role wasn’t having an effect, as corners and free-kicks made the Toffees have little to no threat.

They got their wish with Moyes also not satisfied by his fellow Scotsman, who was relieved from his duties, and the Everton boss has to get it right with his next appointment, as after nine months since his return, he’s still not achieved his desire.

David Moyes hasn’t achieved improvement on set-pieces at Everton yet

Before the manager made his return to Merseyside, it was clear Moyes wanted to improve set-pieces, suggesting that what worked for Dyche was filtering away.

It seems to have stuck, and a solution can’t be found by the 62-year-old, as Dwight McNeil’s inability to stay fit has played its role.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall could be the answer after his positive start with creativity, but Moyes must employ another set-piece coach to make it happen.

Who that will be is unknown, but the Toffees manager must avoid the same mistake as Adam’s disappointing involvement.
