GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - This Sunday, the Green Bay Packers take on the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field in the first game of the regular season.
Kickoff is at 3:25 p.m., but the party gets started Saturday morning with a Packers fan tradition.
This is the third year of the community paint-by-numbers fence.
The fence is already stenciled and ready for fans. There are 18 numbers, and each will be a different color of paint.
Starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, folks are encouraged to come out and bring Packers history to life.
Local artist Zane Statz says each year he loves seeing everyone come out to kick off the home opener.
“It’s fun to have this kind of a canvas this close to such a mega venue like Lambeau Field. The first 11 fences I did, I really enjoyed. It’s fun to do that. The last three years, it’s really cool to have the community help take part in that, so after it’s complete and they walk back, they drive by, they can say, ‘I painted.’ They helped contribute to that, so no longer are there three artists on this street, there’s probably 600, 700,” Statz said.
This year’s fence shows 12 people, mostly Packers players. There’s Paul Hornung, Don Hudson, Sterling Sharpe, LeRoy Butler, Dorsey Levens, Matthew Golden, Frank Winters, Jordy Nelson, Don Beebe, Wisconsin comedian Charlie Berens, and a quick addition to the design, Micah Parsons.
“The day after we had the trade, we had Micah added to the fence,” Statz said. “There was a little empty space I was leaving for people to sign the fence when they’re done painting, but I filled that with Micah, so now the background of the behind the players is kind of an abstract fans kind of multi-layer, so that’s where I’m gonna have the people painting the fence sign it. Kind of even makes more sense because they’re fans of the project as well.”
You can maybe guess who’s partnering with this fence project by the Glazer donut bag and a man saying, “See you next time!”
Statz says it can be tough to find a sponsor to help make this all come together because the area is zoned residential, and that means no branding, no logos.
Statz found some clever ways to include the nod to Kwik Trip without breaking any rules.
Again, this all starts at 8 a.m. Saturday. There’s no sign-up, just come out. Parking will be free.
The fence is along Lambeau Field near Ridge Road, near Hinterland.
Packers great Frank Winters plans to be here from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. to help paint the fence.
Painting continues until it’s finished. Last year’s fence painting took 8 hours to finish with nearly 500 people joining in.
