On deadline day of the summer transfer window, a deal had been agreed upon between Liverpool and Crystal Palace to send center back Marc Guéhi to Merseyside, but Palace manager Oliver Glasner played a pivotal role in getting the deal to collapse in the eleventh hour. The former Bundesliga manager threatened to walk if the club followed through with the sale of the England international after the club had already lost Eberechi Eze to Arsenal just months after winning the FA Cup title and getting dropped out of the Europa League into the Conference League. Some reports suggested that Guéhi was upset at not being able to get his dream move after remaining incredibly professional throughout the summer as negotiations went on behind the scenes, but he’s now stuck with Palace until at least January. His contract with the Eagles runs through next summer.
Per information from The Mirror’s John Cross (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich have now entered the race to try to sign Guéhi this summer as a free agent and are one of several European clubs interested in trying to do so. In theory, Liverpool could go back in for him in the January transfer window, but they would have to pay a fee not long before he would be able to leave the club as a free agent, which they might not want to do, especially considering how much can happen with the player between now and January.
With that said, Guéhi’s failed move to Liverpool leaves the door wide open for a number of clubs to try to get him this summer once his Palace contract expires. As is always the case, Bayern and other interested European clubs can begin speaking with the player regarding a move as of January 1st, and he could even sign a pre-contract to join a club from that date onward up until his Palace contract expires. This give European clubs outside of the Premier League a bit of a leg up in terms of the timing of negotiations over a potential move, but the player himself might still have his heart set on joining Liverpool, where center back Ibrahima Konaté has been the subject of talks of potentially leaving the club next summer.
