The New York Giants face off against the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium on Sunday afternoon for Week 1. New York aims to snap their two-game losing streak in season openers, with their last 1-0 start coming in 2022. The Giants’ offensive line will be tested against the Commanders’ experienced defensive line, especially with their blinding protector not at 100%.

As previously discussed on Gridiron Heroics,Andrew Thomas passed his physical two weeks ago, prompting the Giants to activate him from the PUP list. Since then, the All-Pro has practiced in a limited capacity as he works his way back from last season’s Lisfranc injury. However, Thomas is still dealing with foot soreness, which has caused him to miss Thursday’s practice, and his status for Week 1 remains in question, although he returned on Friday as a limited participant.

According to Dan Salomone of the team’s website, the Giants officially listed Andrew Thomas as doubtful in their official Week 1 injury report. The All-Pro left tackle essentially has a 25% chance of playing against the Washington Commanders. Since Thomas isn’t quite 100%, the Giants need to play it safe with him, especially at the start of the season.

The plan is for free-agent acquisition James Hudson III to start if Andrew Thomas is unable to play. The former Cleveland Brown has primarily played on the right side of the offensive line, but he started three games at left tackle in 2024 and received most of the reps on the left side during training camp. Marcus Mbow, the promising fifth-round pick, is another option, but the Giants will likely turn to Hudson.
