Manchester United want to replace underperforming star with 1995-born veteran in bargain move

Manchester United are eying a Bosman move for AC Milan’s star goalkeeper Mike Maignan ahead of next summer’s window.

According to Fichajes, Manchester United are prepared to make a move for Mike Maignan on a free transfer next summer. The France No.1 did not move in the recent window despite heavy links to Chelsea early on, as he seems destined to run down his contract at the San Siro and seek a bigger opportunity next year.

Mike Maignan will emerge on the list of many top clubs next summer when his contract runs down at Milan. The keeper is already into the final year of his deal at the San Siro, and did attract massive interest in the summer, particularly from Chelsea, who seemed destined to sign him earlier.

There’s no sign of a new deal forthcoming from Milan, and there might be a case that the 1995-born veteran would leave on a Bosman move next summer. Chelsea tried to sign him before the Club World Cup, but as the summer progressed, they ruled out a potential move, thus keeping faith in Robert Sanchez for the upcoming season.

Chelsea are reportedly considering returning for Maignan on a Bosman deal next summer, but around then, they will have plenty of competition in place. Notably, Manchester United held discussions with Milan over exchanging Rasmus Hojlund and Maignan during the summer, but never concluded as the Dane ended up joining Napoli in the end.

However, Manchester United are prepared to return for Maignan next summer to snap him up on a Bosman deal. The idea of having the 1995-born veteran on a free transfer will suit their pockets, as well as allow the France international to make a switch to a big club within the Premier League.

Mike Maignan to replace Andre Onana?

Manchester United are still hoping to sell Andre Onana, with the Turkish and Saudi Arabian windows still open. They have already signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, and while the Belgian is seen as a No.1 choice for the current campaign, someone like Maignan could easily take his first-choice status away next summer.

Manchester United may need European football to attract players like Maignan next season, as there’s a big possibility that many of the Champions League teams will angle for a Bosman deal for the Frenchman. However, for a club of the stature of Manchester United, they may still be seen as favourites for a player of Maignan’s quality, with or without Champions League football.
