The Blues’ opening match of the 2025/26 Barclays Women’s Super League season ended in a 2-1 defeat at the home of the champions.
After starting the brighter of the two sides with Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw testing Hannah Hampton early on, it was Sonia Bompastor’s team who opened the scoring.
Aggie Beever-Jones found space in the area to tuck home a pinpoint cross from the right, but we responded well and Alex Greenwood saw a vicious free-kick smash the crossbar before half-time.
We then pushed for an equaliser with Yui Hasegawa coming close twice, but the Londoners doubled their lead when Maika Hamano dispatched from close range.
City then pulled a goal back with 20 minutes remaining when Niamh Charles’ misdirected a headed clearance into her own net.
We pushed for an equaliser but there was further cause for concern when Greenwood and Lily Murphy were forced off through injuries before full-time.
