New Albion full-back Alfie Gilchrist admits it was hard to leave Chelsea but he is eager to get going with his new club.

Gilchrist, who played against the Baggies last year while on loan at Sheffield United, was an academy graduate at Stamford Bridge and is hoping to replace Darnell Furlong at right-back following his departure to Championship rivals Ipswich.

“It was tough to leave Chelsea after being there for such a long time, but I felt like this was the right move for my career, to move on and find my way somewhere else,’’ he told WBA TV.

“I only heard about Albion’s interest a few days ago, so it’s all come around quite quickly, to be honest. I’m really excited to get going and show everyone what I can do.

“I played against Albion when I was on loan at Sheffield United last season and both games were really good encounters. I remember the atmospheres being really exciting in both matches and I know Albion have some really talented players who I’m excited to work with now I’m here.

“I’m 21 and I want to play regular senior football. I feel like I’ll have a good chance of doing that here if I work hard and continue to develop.

“As I say, I really can’t wait to get going and I’m determined to hit the ground running quickly and show the manager, the rest of the players and the supporters, my best level.

“In terms of what I believe I’m good at in particular, I feel like one-v-one defending is one of my best attributes. I’d say I also have a lot of pace and desire, and I’m someone who’ll always give 100% in every single match.

“When it comes to a position, I’m comfortable playing right-back or anywhere across the backline. I just want to be on the pitch helping the team out and playing as much football as I can.”
