Aston Villa reportedly showed late interest in Will Osula on deadline day as it was revealed why the Newcastle striker's proposed move to Frankfurt collapsed.

Osula looked to be heading for Germany on Monday after it emerged the Magpies were willing to sanction his exit after the arrivals of Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.

But a move to Frankfurt fell through after it emerged there was a change in conditions to the deal which ensured Osula stayed put in the north east.

According to our sister paper the Newcastle Chronicle, Frankfurt were told that a £4.3m loan fee was required but an obligation to buy the forward for £17.3m proved a major barrier.

Frankfurt briefed reporters that the overall fee demanded was too high for Osula and that a “pure purchase” offer was not on the table.

Newcastle stated that they wanted to keep the Denmark Under-21 international despite late interest from Bayer Leverkusen, and Villa.

Frankfurt sporting director Timmo Hardung told the club’s official podcast: “For something like this to go through, all the parameters have to be right. We kept an eye on the market.

“Throughout the day, doors kept opening, and we briefly looked into the cracks and saw where it might lead. In the end, we closed the door.

“Things are getting wilder and crazier on the last day of transfers. But we didn’t wake up in the morning panicking that we still had to sign one, two, three or four players. And that’s why there was no reason to be upset in the evening.”

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: “Regular football will be something he needs for his own career at some stage, but whether that’s now or in the future, who knows?"
