Leeds United star could face UEFA investigation after recent incident

The international break will allow Leeds United to reboot and prepare for the next few games this season. So far, the club’s start to life in the Premier League can be classified as very positive.

Four points from nine, with two clean sheets in three games is a decent start. Getting huge results at home to Everton and Newcastle United have shown that Daniel Farke’s side are not pushovers.

During the Bulgaria vs Spain game, Ilia Gruev was involved in a little spat with the Spanish players. He bundled Barcelona star Lamine Yamal in the box, and just as the winger was getting up on his feet, it looked like Gruev left his knee in the player’s back. This led to players from both teams having a go at each other for a bit, but was eventually de-escalated.

Former referee Keith Hackett said the incident could be investigated if Spain flag the issue, but he believes it is unlikely as of now.

“The matter will be investigated if the incident is brought to the attention of the match delegate.” he said to MOT Leeds News.

“It looks unlikely if the on-field officials have seen it and acted by not taking any action, as authorities have a reluctance to re-referee incidents.

“This clip does not give the clarity required to kick off the investigation.”

What Ilia Gruev did after the game

After the game where his country lost 3-0, Gruev gave an interview saying how his team need to do better in upcoming games. He also praised Spain’s Lamine Yamal even after the scuffle between the two:

“We did not react well after the goals. We must continue to fight. We have a very difficult and important match ahead of us against Georgia. I do not think it is a tragedy to lose 0:3 to Spain. We have better chances than against Spain.” he said.

“Today we saw the class of Yamal. The whole world has problems defending against them. There is nothing to worry about.”
